Cade Underbough is a halfing wild magic sorcerer and a member of the Lif of the Party. He is played by thehangrybadger.

Description

Appearance

Cade clothes have best been described as comfortable. He wears fairly baggy clothes that allow for free movement and priority comfort. Cade's hair is black and slicked back around his head. Its also been noted that he wears a plain silver ring speculated to be a wedding band.

Cade's appearance has been altered from time to time due to the effects of his wild magic--the most significant of his skin being turned blue. This effect lasted more than 24 hours, and is unclear to its total duration.

Personality

Cade has a dominant and confident personality. While he hasn't shown to enjoy a position as a leader, he is well suited for it with his capability to make hard calls for the benefit of himself and his allies. Cade adopts very loose morals--favoring his own rules and honor rather than the law. Cade is drawn to power and wealth and is willing to make tough calls if he believes it will advance him.

In battle, Cade rarely casts spells but instead relies on his cantrips as his main source of damage.

History

Before the Campaign

Cade has never spoken of his life before joining the Lif of the Party and no acquaintance or relative has shown up within the campaign.

Tides of Time Saga

Upon joining the Lif of the Party, Cade quickly found himself in a position as the party's main spellcaster. In addition, Cade quickly took up charge of the party finances along with the business adventures of Lif's Loft.

Making Contracts

When Sorrow went shopping for his badgers, Cade met Carg for the first time. Cade bought the bugbear, who promised to serve him for an indefinite amount of time. Carg became Cade's servant, wingman, and bodyguard for the future--following him until Cade's last appearance in the campaign.

Becoming the Xanathar

During the Lif of the Party's dungeon delve into the Xanathar's Lair, Cade came into possession of the beholder's Ring of Mind Shielding--which possessed the soul of the defeated Xanathar. The beholder seemingly decided to choose Cade to be his successor, and guided Cade deeper in the layer towards his majordomo, Ahmaergo. Here, Cade defected from the Lif of the Party and became the new leader of the Xanathar's Guild.

Skills and Abilities

Cantrip Mastery: Cade is well versed and practiced in casting cantrips and has learned to cast them up to twice as fast as the normal spellcaster--allowing him to sling twice as many cantrips as his enemies.

Sorcerer Abilities

  • Wild Magic Surge: Cade's spells are volatile and have the chance backfire on him, causing random magical effects.
  • Tides of Chaos: Cade is able to channel the raw power of his magic to alter his performance. However, doing so greatly increases the chances of his next spell going awry.
  • Font of Magic: Cade is able to alter the channels of magic within him, filtering larger spell slots into smaller spell slots and vice versa.
  • Metamagic: Cade is able to twist spells to suit his needs.
    • Quickened Spell: Cade is able to speed up the casting time of certain spells, allowing him time to cast other spells before the enemy can react.
    • Distant Spell: Cade is able to double the potential reach of his spells to hit those far beyond the normal range of his spellcraft.

Create Bonfire Cantrip Conjuration You create a bonfire on ground that you can see within range. Until the spell ends, the magic bonfire fills a 5-foot cube. Any creature in the bonfire’s space when you cast the spell must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 1d8 fire damage. A creature must also make the saving throw when it moves into the bonfire’s space for the first time on a turn or ends its turn there.
Fire Bolt Cantrip Evocation You hurl a mote of fire at a creature or object within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 fire damage. A flammable object hit by this spell ignites if it isn't being worn or carried.
Magic Missile 1st Evocation You create three glowing darts of magical force. Each dart hits a creature of your choice that you can see within range. A dart deals 1d4 + 1 force damage to its target. The darts all strike simultaneously, and you can direct them to hit one creature or several.
Arc Lightning 2nd Evocation Your hands erupt with tiny sparks. Choose a point within range that you can see. An arc of lightning lurches from your fingertips and then is redirected by you towards a creature within range.
Fireball 3rd Evocation A bright streak flashes from your pointing finger to a point you choose within range and then blossoms with a low roar into an explosion of flame. Each creature in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on that point must make a Dexterity saving throw. A target takes 8d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Amulet of Mystra's Might

This silver amulet was discovered on the corpse of a slain minotaur within the Xanathar's Lair. The item has an 8-pointed star etched into one side of it and its wearer feels it resonate with their magical abilities.

The wearer of this amulet is able to double the damage of their spells by using this amulet, however it automatically triggers a wild magic surge.

Ring of Bureaucratic Wizardry

A spiked ring given to Cade when he entered Waterdeep. This ring tracks all spells cast by Cade.

Smokepowder

An explosive packet collected from the corpse of the drow gunslinger, Soluun Xibrindas. It is used to fuel the flintlock pistol.

Flintlock Pistol

The weapon of the drow gunslinger, Soluun Xibrindas. It has been noted to be of Lantanese design.

Wand of Secrets

A wand gifted to the party by the Blackstaff, Vajra Safahr. Activating it allows its user to detect hidden doorways and other secrets.

Ring of Mind Shielding

A brass ring with a blue crystal in the shape of a brain--taken from the corpse of the Xanathar. This ring makes its wearer immune to magic that allows other creatures to read their thoughts, determine whether they are lying, know their alignment, or know their creature type. In addition, the wearer can choose to reject telepathic messages.

This particular ring holds the soul of the Xanathar--who is able to appear as an apparition to those who wear the ring.

Bag of Financial Security

A magic bag gifted to the Lif of the Party by the Bank of Waterdeep. This bag magically connects to the party's vault within the Bank of Waterdeep--allowing one to easily deposit or withdraw money from the account.

In addition, a user can drop objects into the bag to have them appraised by and sold to the Bank.

Blackstaff Fragment

A fragment of the blackstaff left after Vajra Safahr detonated it. This fragment was pulled from the forehead of the defeated Xanathar, and holds the personality of the staff.
